Among the most important are Parco dei Cento Laghi in high Val Parma, Parco Regionale dei Boschi Carrega, in Sala Baganza, and the fauna oasis of Monte Fuso.
The Province also offers many historic itineraries for medieval castle enthusiasts. The castles are a heritage of the various Signorie that ruled Parma between the 14th and the 15th century: the Scaligeri, the Visconti and then the Sforza families. Among the major landmarks are the Bardi fortress, the Castle of Torrechiara, the Rocca of Fontanellato and the Royal Palace of Colorno, but many more can be found scattered between the lower Parma territory and the Apennines.
